New Hampshire DB Jake Kiley Commits to Penn State

States like New Hampshire are often overlooked by college recruiters scouring the northeast. With a population of a little over 1.3 million (barely 14.5% of the population of New York City), the talent pool in …

Big Ten Basketball Schedule Released: Penn State Screwed Over

Submitted by on August 26, 2010No Comment

Let’s be honest, Penn State isn’t in any shape to be competitive in the Big Ten regardless of how their schedule turned out.  But it’s not like the Nittany Lions could’ve gotten any worse of a draw.

For the second straight year, Penn State will play Indiana and Iowa just once, taking away two chances for victory over fellow conference cellar dwellers.  We already knew that, so the blow is somewhat softened.  Worse than that, though: Penn State’s home games against Purdue and Michigan State will be held over winter break, when 90% of the student body is home and unable to attend the two games they’d actually show up for.

Purdue and Michigan State will be ranked in the top 10 to start the 2010 season, they’ll be the standard bearers for the Big Ten, and the schedule makers decided that Penn State students didn’t deserve to see either.  Thanks a bunch, guys.  For a schedule already bereft of big games–Maryland at home is the only out-of-conference matchup worth watching–this is a slap in the face to Ed DeChellis and to Nittany Nation. I’m sickened by this announcement.

Penn State might not be a basketball school, but when top conference opponents have come to town, the Bryce Jordan Center has filled up.  There were more than 14,000 in attendance for last year’s tilt against the Spartans, a game that Penn State entered at 0-11 in the conference.

Now, the Big Ten has taken away home court advantage the team could’ve possibly had in its biggest matchups, they’ve prevented Ed DeChellis and his staff from being able to show a recruit that the BJC isn’t always dead, and they’ve stolen the financial benefit that comes from bringing 15,000 fans onto campus.  But most of all, they’ve taken away the fun that college basketball is all about. The student section screaming their lungs out, praying for an upset, rushing the court if the miraculous happens.  We deserve that chance.

Then again, perhaps this gives Penn State an edge: they’ll be used to playing in front of empty seats by that time.  It certainly worked out that way two years ago, when Penn State stunned Purdue over winter break in front of a few dozen fans who braved a snowstorm to show up.

The full schedule is after the jump, home games bolded.  Get angry, people.
