Week 4 Blogpolling

Submitted by on September 20, 20103 Comments

You guys should know the drill by now. I don’t claim to be objective, consistent, or reliable. I see things as I see ‘em, and, unless you’re going to make a legitimate argument, I’m probably not going to change my mind.  I’m fickle, I’m opinionated, and I’m unimpressed by weak wins.  For a few more weeks, my frivolity will be on display, until we have a real grasp on just how good each team really is.

Even I have a hard time defending some of my picks. Last week I had Air Force ranked, but Oklahoma drops 8 points after beating them in a squeaker? Why? Because all the teams ranked ahead of them have had more good weeks than mediocre ones, unlike this Oklahoma team that’s nearly lost to both Air Force and Utah State, even if they did beat up on Florida State.  Why is Stanford #8? Because while I was watching their matchup late Saturday night, they seemed as dominant as any team could be.  Could Florida be higher? Sure. But I’ll need to see the offense put two competent weeks together before I anoint them a top 5 team.  Texas at 11? Well, Northwestern beat Rice about as badly as the Lonhorns did.

And by the way, I’d rather be wildly oscillating from week to week than stick to my own preconceived notions (a la the mainstream polls). And let it be known, fellow Big Ten fans, of Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, and Michigan State, that I’ve really got no way to differentiate between the five.  If they could’ve all been T-16, I would’ve done that.

Don’t try and make sense out of these rankings. But if you’ve got a gripe, let me know. I will, legitimately, take it into account, since we don’t submit a final ballot until Wednesday.  And as always, if there’s a consensus top-10 team that I’m just not ranking, it’s probably an accident, so you should let me know. No, USC does not qualify as such.
