Before I begin, I should probably explain why we haven’t posted in a while. Frankly, it’s just been bad timing. I just got back from a study abroad program in Europe, and Charlie is still …

Snake and Laddering through Charlie’s Week 3 blogpoll

Submitted by on September 23, 2009No Comment

If you are a mid major, you just can’t lose. There’s simply no margin of error and there are no second chances in the cutthroat world of mid major programs. Unfortunately BYU and Utah could not get past week 3 unblemished and are basically out of the BCS argument. And what was that I heard all off season about mid majors being able to compete week in, week out in a BCS caliber conference again? I hereby drop both BYU and Utah (completely out of the Blogpoll) with a smile on my face.

1

W Tennessee 23-13. The Gators did not manage to put on the dominating effort many expected from them. Tebow had 2 turnovers which Tennessee converted into 10 points and Florida’s first 13 points came off of the 3 returns for 97 yards by James. Though they did take care business, they are clearly not as unbeatable as I initially believed.  Next up: @ Kentucky

2

W Texas Tech 34-24. In what was billed as the next big shootout, the first half actually ended with a competitive 10-3 score. Both teams exploded in the second half however with the Longhorns prevailing despite being outgained by nearly 200 passing yards and 100 total yards. Texas Tech outpassed Colt McCoy 420 to 205 yards, but it was their -6 rushing yards that was their undoing in the game. Next up: UTEP

3

W North Texas 53-7. Bama QB Greg McElroy threw for 4 TDs and ran for another while sitting out for most of the 2nd half as the Tide rolled over North Texas. Bama’s defense held North Texas to 61 rushing yards, 7 first downs and 187 total yards. Next up: Arkansas

4

W SE Louisiana 52-6. The Rebels forced 5 turnovers in a dominating defensive effort against the Lions of SE Louisiana. Those 5 turnovers led to 21 points for the Rebels as they had no trouble against SE Louisiana. Next up: @ South Carolina

5

W Temple 31-6. Even the flu could not slow down Evan Royster and the running game. In an clear attempt to put their struggles with the running game against Syracuse and Akron behind them, Penn State and Evan Royster rolled up 186 rushing yards including 119 just in the first half. Next up: Iowa

6

W Minnesota 35-21. Minnesota put up a heck of a fight against ranked Cal but Jahvid Best refused to lose to the Golden Gophers. The Bears were actually tied in the fourth quarter before Best’s 5 TDs helped Cal pull away eventually. Minnesota’s 4 turnovers did not help either. Next up: @ Oregon

W #19 Nebraska 16-15. Nebraska led for most of the final quarter before Tyrod Taylor scrambled for what seemed like an eternity leading receivers in the endzone with his hands before throwing a strike for their first lead in the second half with 21 seconds left in the game. Virginia Tech was once again anemic on offense only rushing for 86 total yards and 11 first downs. Next up: #9 Miami

8

W La-Lafayette 31-3.  Despite their sloppy play, the Tigers put away La Lafayette. LSU struggled with the deep passes and QB Jordan Jefferson threw his first pick of the season. The Cajuns of La Lafayette had several scoring opportunities but were stuffed by the Tiger defense at critical moments including 3 turnovers by the Cajuns. Next up: @ Mississippi State

9

W Fresno State 51-34. It was hard to believe this was the same team that managed to hold Oregon to 0 first downs in week 1. Fresno State outgained them in total yards, passing yards, rushing yards, time of possession and first downs but it was their 2 turnovers that eventually led the Broncos to victory over the Bulldogs at home. Next up: @ Bowling Green

W #14 Georgia Tech 33-17. Miami put on a clinic on Thursday on how to stop the gimmicky triple offense. Play your assignments and tackle well. The Canes did exactly that and QB Harris completed 20 of 25 passes for 270 yards and 3 TDs as they shut down the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech’s vaulted triple offense only rolled up 95 rushing yards against the Canes. The ACC has clearly found a new gameplan against the Yellow Jackets. Shut down the run and force them to pass. Next up: @ #11 Virginia Tech

Miami is scary. If there was a better team playing more efficient offense and suffocating defense (they held the triple option to under 100 yards), please let me know. Look for Miami to jump into the Top 5 should they take care of Virginia Tech without breaking a sweat. The Hokies are clearly the Hokies of old where their defense just can’t handle carrying an anemic offense on their backs for an entire game. Sure they beat ranked Nebraska, but their anemic offensive performance will eventually catch up to them against competition that can actually score points (like Miami).

Newcomers this week: Oklahoma State, Kansas, Oregon, UCLA and Iowa. All five took care of business and are one of the better teams in the nation.

With conference play resuming this week, everyone will get a much better picture of individual teams. Unfortunately for mid majors, week 4 play is also where BCS caliber teams will get to play against actual competition providing teams the chance to leap them in the polls.
