Regret Passing Up on Penn State Yet?

Submitted by on December 7, 200913 Comments

Okay, I’ve said it multiple times in the past 24 hours, since Penn State’s bowl fate became known, and when it was revealed that Orlando, not Miami or Glendale, would be the host to the Nittany Lions: I’m not bummed out that we’re going to the Capital One Bowl.  I’ve laid out my reasons why in another post, and don’t feel like rehashing that argument.

But I offer this post as a humble reminder to the powers at be why you don’t mess with Penn State.  With the largest alumni association in the country, and a rabid fan base, we’re the exact kind of team you want to showcase in your bowl game.  Take a look at the Google Trends page from last night, taken after the bowl announcements.

That’s right, “penn state bowl game 2010” was first, and “capital one bowl 2010” was fourth, higher than any other team or bowl game.  More people wanted to find out about the Capital One Bowl than even the BCS Championship Game, or any other Bowl.  That’s thousands of Penn State fans flooding Google to try and get information about their favorite team, and, probably, buying tickets and figuring out their flight plan to Orlando.  You’ll notice that the Fiesta Bowl comes in 5th, behind each of those search terms, and the Orange Bowl, which picked Iowa instead of Penn State, is way down there at 12.  More people want to see the “snl tiger woods skit” than the Iowa-Georgia Tech matchup in the Orange Bowl.

Let this be a notice to the Fiesta Bowl and the Orange Bowl: you could’ve had Penn State, and its legion of fan support.  You could’ve had a sellout, and a giant TV audience.  Never underestimate the power of the Nittany Lion fanbase. And when PSU-LSU draws better TV ratings, and better attendance than either of those BCS games, we’ll have the last laugh.

The next time Penn State is on the fringe of the BCS, I have a sneaking suspicion we’ll get that bid.  Sure, you rewarded the deserving team, but that won’t change anything when nobody cares about your game.  Kudos to the selection committees, for sticking to their morals this time and rewarding merit over money, but I just can’t say it’s a decision made in their own best interests.

And this comes with an ultimatum to Penn State fans: we need to make our voices heard! Get to the Capital One Bowl, and be loud and Penn State proud. Let’s sell that place out.  Watch the game on TV, and make sure we have the best ratings.  We want the Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl to be hanging their heads on New Years Day, watching Penn State play a great game in the Capital One Bowl and wonder, ah, jeez, why did we take Boise State and Iowa instead?

edit: Sounds like I’m not the only one with that plan.  A Facebook Group called “Get the Capital One bowl a higher TV rating than the Orange/Fiesta Bowl” has sprung up overnight, and already has 2000 members.  Sign up, and remember: next time, we’ll be in Glendale or Miami.

Very good research. We'll get a chance to compare TV ratings later. And the Cap One Bowl will be handicapped by the fact that it is in the afternoon and also overlaps the Gator Bowl (Bobby Bowden), the Champs Sports Bowl & the Flyers/Bruins Fenway Park hockey game on Jan 1. The Orange Bowl will be the only college football bowl game on the 5th.

  • Lets go Lions!

This is awesome! Capital One bowl will be televised by ABC/ESPN and Orlando is home to Disneyworld. Picking Penn State is a major win situation for the Disney Corporation.

Agreed. Penn State/LSU should definitely hold it's own. This matchup reminds me very much of the LSU-Miami matchup a couple of years ago. When national sport writers start ranking bowls according to hype and intrigue, this one should be near the top of the list.

We're already in talks with Horton Plaza here in San Diego to get some projection screens in for a Penn State Holiday/Bowl party. This will be great! LSU! LSU! I'm really excited for this LSU matchup.

Don't know how it would have been had it been GA Tech or Boise St. But a BCS bowl is always nice.

Agree — Great article. Thank you. Only quibble is with “deserve.” The only team that deserved a bid from the Big Ten was Ohio State. One thing I like about college is “every week is a playoff”. How can you say a team that lost two of its last three games (one to an unranked team at home) “deserves” a BCS spot. Please.

Hahaha, I simply love the sarcasm that oozes at Boiled Sports. Check out this little gem they wrote about the Orange Bowl. http://www.boiledsports.com/2009/12/obligatory-…

“Orange Bowl — Iowa versus Georgia Tech, 1/5/10

Yawn. Seriously, who cares besides Iowa and G-Tech supporters? And this is a marquee bowl game, we're told. BCS and all. Yes, it's very nice for these programs to make a BCS bowl and it reaps millions for their programs and conferences. But for those who like meaningful football? Georgia Tech was a great story until they fell on their faces against a mediocre Georgia team. Sure, they won the ACC title game against unranked Clemson, but isn't that like winning your rec league softball tournament? It's fun and your family cheers for you, but does it matter? No.

And Iowa was another great story until the roof collapsed on them, they lost two of three end the season and Stanzi ran the ole “Roll out unprotected in the end zone and then fold your knee sideways” play.”

-Last time Iowa was in the Orange Bowl, they sold 40,000 tickets.
Last time PSU was in the Orange Bowl, they sold 35,000 tickets.

-In head-to-head match-ups in the last two years, Iowa is 2-0 against PSU, one win coming AT Beaver Stadium in a NIGHT game on NATIONAL TV in front of the self-proclaimed “Best Student Section in the Nation.”

-Iowa took Ohio State to overtime in Columbus, the very same Buckeye team that racked up over 250 yards rushing in a 24-7 beatdown of the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium on NATIONAL TV in front of the self proclaimed “Best Student Section in the Nation.”

The point is, Penn State is NOT more deserving than Iowa. Iowa beat them soundly this year and deserves the bid over the Lions.

Also, the myth that Iowa won't travel or draw as much attention as well as Penn State will is just absurd.

As far as Boise State is concerned, they BEAT a Top-25 team this season. Penn State didn't.

All this coming from a Penn State fan and student. It's time we got over ourselves, we AREN'T as big a deal as we seem to think.

Oh no I do agree whole heartedly that Iowa was more deserving following this season. We tried to lobby as hard as possible but now its over with, I am rooting for the Hawks to take it to those Yellow Jackets. But to claim Penn State only sold 35,000 tickets is absurd. I was at the Orange Bowl in 2006 and the entire place was awashed in white sprinkled with some Seminole fans. Ticket sales don't account for secondary tickets sold and anyone who covered or was there that night clearly saw a Penn State dominated Orange Bowl crowd.

That's right. We owned South Beach 3-4 days before the game started. FSU didn't show up until the night before the game.

Via Steward Mandel of Sports Illustrated “TV ratings from Saturday (via @jonathanganz). Cincy-Pitt: 5.1. ACC title game: 1.9.”

Now take that GA Tech team that won the championship game that earned a 1.9 rating and put them in the Orange Bowl against Iowa. If you see a train wreck coming, is it your civic duty to warn anyone?

Doesn't a 1.9 rating for any television show mean it won't be on for another episode?
