Penn State diving into the endzone for a late 16-9 lead with less than 5 minutes left in the game.
The 1992 Snow Bowl between the Nittany Lions and the Fighting Irish marked the last time the two regional rivals would play before resuming a home and away series in 2006 and 2007. It was the final home game for the Fighting Irish who was having a decent season with a 7-1-1 record. Penn State on the other hand had raced to a 5-0 start before struggling in the second half of the season carrying a 6-3 record heading into South Bend.
Notre Dame struck first, but Penn State took a 16 to 9 lead with just 4:19 left in the game. The Irish responded with one final drive which ended when Rick Mirer found Jerome Bettis in the end zone for a touchdown. Trailing by 1, Lou Holtz did not want to end the game in a tie and gambled by going for the 2 point conversion. Rick Mirer did not disappoint when he hit an open Reggie Brooks in the back of the endzone for the 1 point win sending out the Notre Dame seniors with a win for the first time in 3 years.
