Toss Up Pick of the Week: Penn State / Alabama

Devon // I wish I could pick Penn State. I really do.  But that would be going with my heart, rather than my head.  You see, my heart tells me that this is a vulnerable Alabama team, playing without their Heisman trophy winning running back, and their star defensive end. That this game means more to Joe Paterno and Penn State than it does to Saban and Alabama.  That Robert Bolden showed so much moxie and poise last week that he won’t be intimidated in his first road game.  But then my head reminds me just how good Alabama is.  That Trent Richardson is no slouch himself, and the dropoff from Ingram is minimal.  And that Julio Jones, not Ingram, is probably the best player on the Alabama offensive, anyway.  And that the Penn State offensive line looked so mediocre against Youngstown State that to win the battle of the trenches against the talented, if unproven, front 7 of Alabama will be no small feat.  And that no matter how composed Bolden is, this is still a road game against the #1 team in the country.  And that Alabama at 90% is probably better than Penn State at 100%, especially under the lights in Bryant-Denny.  If I was picking against the spread, I’d go with Penn State.  This will be a tight game.  But I can’t, in all good conscience, predict that Penn State will pull off the stunner.

Kevin // Alabama has a load of talent, this cannot be denied. The Nittany Lions will hang tough in this game though as they are rarely blown out in big games like this. The defense for Penn State will have a hard time keeping Alabama quiet though for 60 minutes, even without Mark Ingram if he stays out of the mix due to recovery from surgery, as Trent Richardson is a talented back and the passing game for Alabama put up some good numbers in the season opener. All of that coupled with the fact that Penn State is starting a true freshman behind center makes for an edge for Alabama. I think Bolden will make a few nice plays as long as the offensive line can step their game up but I am not counting on him to lead Penn State to a win at this point against a loaded Alabama team.
