Toss Up Pick of the Week: Temple / Penn State State
Kevin // A lot of people seem to be worried about this weekend’s game with the Owls. They shouldn’t. After watching each of Temple’s first three games in person there is little to be over-concerned about. Quarterback Chester Stewart is prone to make mistakes and hold on to the ball too long. Against a solid defense like Penn State’s that could be a real detriment to Al Golden’s team this weekend. They’ll make some plays and this is still the best Temple team we have seen in…well, ever, but look for Penn State to fine tune their running game a bit just like they did last year. Penn Sate 27, Temple 13.
Devon // The fact that Penn State vs. Temple is the “marquee” game of this week’s Big Ten slate is a scary thought, because even a much improved Temple team isn’t going to pull off the upset, though they will give Penn State more trouble than they have in recent years. Bernard Pierce isn’t Trent Richardson, but he can break through weak arm tackles. The Temple defense isn’t Alabama’s, but they’ll confuse the young Bolden with a variety of different looks. But Temple will need to play a flawless game to have any hopes of pulling off the upset, and a team with a very, very mediocre quarterback won’t be able to do that, especially as Penn State’s front 7 slowly rounds in to shape. This will probably be similar to last week’s script: an inconsistent, maddening effort that’s still an entirely comfortable win.
Charlie // Let’s just put it this way, Temple with arguably it’s best squad in recent memory last season, the one that went 7-0 in conference play before falling to Ohio for the MAC East title and a shot at the MAC championship, still merely managed 2 field goals against Penn State. I get that the Owls are 3-0, their best record since 1979, and against somewhat legitimate opponents, but don’t forget that Joe Paterno is undefeated against Temple. To date, he has never lost against Wayne Hardin 8-0, Jerry Berndt 4-0, Ron Dickerson 4-0, Bobby Wallace 1-0, and current head caoch Al Golden 4-0 and I just don’t see that changing this season even with a win over Big East foe UConn under it’s belt. Penn State defense will focus on stopping Bernard Pierce and force Chester Steward to beat them. The running backs will most likely be the focus of this game as Penn State fans will look to see whether Royster can return to last season’s form. Penn State 31 – Temple 14
