Before I begin, I should probably explain why we haven’t posted in a while. Frankly, it’s just been bad timing. I just got back from a study abroad program in Europe, and Charlie is still …

Blogpoll: Week Six

Submitted by on October 5, 2010One Comment

By now, you know the drill. We’ve still got another 24 hours before this thing becomes finalized, so if you’ve got an argument to make, let it be heard. Otherwise, this is what we’ll be submitting this week.

Don’t be fooled by the tremendous amount of movement that’s seemingly everywhere on the ballot: week 5 of the college football season really has given me a sense of where most teams fit in.    I’ve got a much more solid feel on just about every spot than I have yet–and you can see, I dropped just two teams from last week’s ballot, adding only Oklahoma State and Florida State to the party.

We’re starting to learn just how good some of these teams really are–especially in the Big Ten.  Wisconsin was overrated, but maybe, just maybe, the Spartans are a pretty nice football team. We’ll see whether the Denard Robinson express can be slowed down by a real defense, the first one the Wolverines will face all year. That game, more than any other, is the one I’m looking forward to watching this weekend–and you can bet I’ll be pulling for the Spartans. Northwestern didn’t win pretty, but style points are overrated. And I was so impressed with Iowa that Penn State stays on the ballot, albeit at 25. I’m not sure there are many other teams who would’ve kept it as close against the Hawkeyes and #1 Alabama as the Lions did–don’t let the final scores fool you, Penn State held their own against a couple of superior teams.

In the Pac-10, Oregon and Stanford flip-flop after the Ducks’ impressive win over the Cardinal–but I’m not selling just yet on the boys from Palo Alto.  The Ducks proved that they’re for real, finally beating an actual bowl contender, but Stanford at times looked great in one of the most hostile environments imaginable.  I’m still not sure what to make of Arizona–the more I watch Iowa, the more I think their win was incredibly fluky, but they’ll stay in the top-10 for now. I’m glad to see USC validated my hate by dropping one to Washington, so I don’t have to think about ranking them.

As for the SEC, I’m selling. Yes, Alabama is really good. Really, really, really good. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team, college or professional, that can run the ball like they do. I’d be shocked if they don’t win their second consecutive championship. But Arkansas proved that they’re at least a little vulnerable–and for nearly knocking off the Tide, I show the Razorbacks some love. But after that? Auburn’s at 13 almost by default, but I’m not sure they’re better than, say, Michigan State or Utah. I can’t stand LSU, and don’t think they’re any good, but it would be disingenuous to rank them any lower than I do. Florida’s a fraud, South Carolina might be…this is a definite down year for the SEC, outside of Alabama.

Why did Temple drop out? They beat Army last week. Make sure Northern Illinois gets in there.
